In January 2009, the Tohono O’odham Nation announced its intent to take land near Glendale, Ariz. into trust for the purposes of developing a $400 million gaming resort.
SIMG created a comprehensive internal communications plan prior to public announcement that included media training, presentation development, and message development. SIMG also organized and initiated an external communications strategy that included the use of videos, websites, social media, direct mail, PowerPoint presentations, extensive fact sheets, and other documents—all created by SIMG. This project is ongoing, but after five years of working against some political opposition, the Tohono O’odham Nation has garnered public and governmental support and on August 28, 2014 officially broke ground on the property, initiating the construction phase of the project. On March 12, 2015, the Tohono O’odham Nation held a Topping Off ceremony to commemorate the end of steel work. The initial facility is expected to be completed by the end of 2015.
